Vision for 2018 and on toward 2019
After the start of the Cherrapunjee/Sohra Marathon in 2015 and 2016 by an organization in Meghalaya, hope and anticipation of a long term annual event was high amongst the local people as well as those who had dreamed of running in such a spectacular setting.
However due to unknown reasons, the Sohra (Cherrapunjee) Marathon was discontinued after the 2016 event. With no other group taking up the reigns, of what looked to be a successful event of more than 2000 participants, the Rotary Club of Shillong and likeminded persons felt there was a void to be filled.
With this in mind, research and efforts were made to make The Rotary Sohra Marathon a reality. The concept was, to make it a challenging and an AdventerRous event, for both local participants as well as to have an outlet for National and International runners to come and participate in such dramatic and challenging settings.
Along with the tough, challenging and adventurous full Marathon, to be run at the height of the Summer Monsoon in Meghalaya, the Rotary club will also organize a Half Marathon, a 10 km fast and flat race, as well as a 5 km Fun Run, thus offering a well-rounded set of options for all fitness levels, as well as families to participate, as a group, in the event.
The Short Term vision for 2018 is a successful Run for all ages and fitness levels, encouraging healthy lifestyles choices as well as further each participant’s personal fitness through running.
With a, concentrated effort to prepare for the 2019 edition the day after the 2018 event, the Rotary Club of Shillong aims to ensure sustainability and commitment to an annual event for years to come.
Along, with the obvious health goals of running, the Rotary Club will initiate different Social Projects related to education and sport in the Sohra and surrounding villages, with a long term vision of sustainability and continuity.
